Yoshitomo Nara x Stella McCartney’s Spring/Summer 2023 Collaboration.
In December 2022, the fashion brand Stella McCartney announced their second collaboration with Yoshitomo Nara for Spring/Summer 2023.

Previously, notable works of Yoshitomo Nara were incorporated in a timeless Spring/Summer 2021 capsule collection by Stella McCartney.
Going into 2023, the most recent Yoshitomo Nara x Stella McCartney collection features iconic works such as Nara’s Twins I and Little Black Bunny paintings. Additionally, Nara’s infamous “Stop the Bombs” motto can be seen on various items such as dress shirts, canvas tote bags, platform shoes, hoodies, pajamas, and bucket hats.
The cultural significance of Yoshitomo Nara’s work
As one of the pioneers of the Superflat contemporary art movement in Japan, Yoshitomo Nara’s distinct chibi-like works carry on sentiments that resonate with different generations.
Nara’s works are influenced by his love of Rock music. They are also impacted by significant events such as the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 that affected his hometown.
The pieces also reflect times of change and adolescence, experiences of loneliness and growing up, as well as more serious topics like war and peace. Oftentimes, the works are disguised in brightly coloured canvas paintings featuring ‘big-headed’ characters with subtle expressions.
The importance of Yoshitomo Nara’s works is related to the nostalgia and colour that is incorporated in his pieces. The new Spring/Summer capsule collection embodies these qualities and more in the timeless statement pieces.
